The Primary Prevention Project joins together with the Courage to Speak Foundation to present a program for parents, "Parenting Through the Opioid Crisis and Beyond", a Double Dose of Prevention.

The Courage to Speak Foundation is a nonprofit founded after Ginger’s son, Ian, passed from a drug overdose. Since 1996, her foundation had helped empower the lives of many youths to be drug free as well as encourage parents to communicate effectively with their children about the dangers of substances.

Part 1: Featuring the Courage to Speak® Presentation presented by Ginger Katz, CEO, Founder of The Courage to Speak Foundation and Author of Sunny's Story, A Drug Prevention Book.
Part 2: Facilitated by Carlos Reinoso Jr MSMOL, BHCC trained in substance use disorder and addiction presenting Courage to Speak® Courageous Parenting 101 "Parenting Through the Drug Crisis and Beyond".

We are pleased to announce that on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, 6:30pm - 8:00pm, the Primary Prevention Project is hosting a special program for parents and community members at Lake of Isles, 1 Clubhouse Dr, North Stonington, CT.

Our keynote speaker is Stephen Hill, a renowned national speaker on mental health promotion and substance use prevention with a truly inspiring comeback story that everyone must hear.

Stephen is the founder of Speak Sobriety, a young person in recovery, bestselling author, recovery coach, and an attorney. He has presented in front of thousands of people for over 750 schools and coalitions across the country, sharing his cautionary tale of addiction to recovery and beyond.

Through knowledge gained from his own personal and professional experience, Stephen shows parents how to build resilient kids to make healthy choices and overcome adversity. Parents and community members will be equipped with essential insights gained through his lived experience and learn strategies needed to foster resilience, support mental well-being, and prevent substance use in young people.

Ginger Katz is CEO and Founder of The Courage to Speak® Foundation, and Author of Sunny’s Story a drug prevention book. Ginger along with her husband, Larry, founded the Courage to Speak Foundation, shortly after their son, Ian, died of a drug overdose. Ms. Katz, has shared Ian’s Story over 1000 Courage to Speak® presentations in Connecticut and across the country fulfilling her promise to her son, Ian, to do everything in her power to prevent what happened to him from happening to others. Wellness Circle: Chris Herren

In this very personal presentation, Chris will share his recovery journey in a brutally honest format with just a microphone. The event will start with a 5-minute film introducing Herren and showing highlights of his basketball career and his dream to play in the NBA which began to unravel by making a few bad decisions. From growing up in Fall River, MA to playing Division 1 basketball and in the NBA, he will take the audience on his journey from addiction to sobriety. Additionally, he will relate his story to the audience addressing themes of gateway drugs, prescription drug use, vaping and the responsibility of prevention starting with us all. To conclude the event Chris will field questions from the audience.
